Lukas “Luke” Dennis and Veronica “Verne” (Smykowski) Dennis

Lukas “Luke” Maciora was born on April 4th 1874 to Peter Maciora and Anna (Wisniewski) Maciora. When he came to America he changed his last name to Dennis.

On September 21st 1897 in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Minneapolis he married Veronica “Verne” Smykowski. She was born on August 8th 1878 to Pawel “Paul” Peter Smykowski and Katarzyna “Catherine” (Wagner) Smykowski.

On June 8th 1898 they had a daughter named Anna. She died on September 5th 1898 due to a cholera inflammation. They had a son named Anthony who was born and died on May 23rd 1899. They had a daughter named Francisca “Frances” who was born and died on August 15th 1900.

In the 1900 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Lucas (25), Verna (21), Luke’s brother, John (27), Luke’s sister, Eva (18), and a boarder named Stanislaus Kaminski (19). He wrote his immigration date as 1895. Veronica wrote her immigration date as 1887. Luke was written as a coach cleaner for the Rail Road. His brother John was written as the same. His sister Eva was a laundress. The boarder, Stanislaus was a saw mill laborer. They lived next door to Veronica’s parents.

On June 20th 1901 they had a daughter named Pauline Barbara Dennis. On July 29th 1903 they had a son named Vincent Dennis.

In the 1905 Minnesota, Territorial State Census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 9, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Luke (31), Veronica mistakenly written as Berne instead of Verne (26), Pauley (4), Vincent (2), his brother, Ignatius (28), his brother in law, Steve Baldigo (23), his sister, Eva Baldigo (23), and their daughter, Victoria Baldigo (2). Luke, Ignatius, and Steve were all car laborers.

On April 29th 1906 they had a son named Franciscum “Frank” Dennis. Frank died on May 5th 1906.On May 28th 1908 they had a son named Joseph Francis Dennis.

In the 1910 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 9, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Luci (36), Verna (31), Pauline (8), Vincent (7), and Joseph (2). Luke was a coach cleaner.
On June 28th 1911 they had a daughter named Florence Rose Dennis. On January 25th 1914 they had a son named John Lucas Dennis.

In the 1920 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 9, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Lukas (46), Veronica (41), Pauline (18), Vincent (16), Joseph (12), Florence (8), and John (6). Luke was a coach cleaner. Pauline was a clothing cashier. Vincent was a packer in the stock food industry.

On February 18th 1928, Lukas “Luke” Dennis died. He was 53 years old. His death was from pulmonary tuberculosis and a contributory part from Diabetes. He was buried on February 21st 1928 in St Mary’s Cemetery in Minneapolis.

The following year on July 14th 1929 her son Vincent committed suicide.

In the 1930 census Veronica was living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Veronica (52), Florence (18), and John (16). Veronica was a dishwasher at a restaurant. Florence was a parker a creamery.

In the 1940 census Veronica was living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. She was living with her daughter, Florence. The household consisted of Preben Jorgensen (29), Florence Jorgensen (28), Wayne Jorgensen (8), Lyle Jorgensen (2), Dale Jorgensen (1), Veronica Dennis (61), and John Dennis (26). Preben was a laborer in a cabinet factory. John was simply listed as a new worker.

Veronica (Smykowski) Dennis died on January 17th 1953. She was 74 years old. She was also buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Stephen “Steve” John Baldigo and Eva (Maciora/Dennis) Baldigo

Eva Maciora was born on May 10th 1882 to Peter Maciora and Anna (Wisniewski) Maciora. When she came to America she changed her last name to Dennis.

In the 1900 census she was living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota in the home of her brother, Lukas. The household consisted of Lucas (25), Verna (21), John (27), Eva (18), and a boarder named, Stanislaus Kaminski (19). She wrote her immigration date as 1899. She was a laundress.

In about 1902 she married Stephen John Baldigo.

On December 23rd 1902 they had a daughter named Victoria Florence Baldigo.

In the 1905 Minnesota, Territorial State Census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 9, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of her brother, Luke Dennis (31), his wife, Veronica Dennis, mistakenly written as Berne instead of Verne (26), their daughter, Pauley Dennis(4), their son, Vincent Dennis (2), her brother, Ignatius Dennis(28), her husband, Steve Baldigo (23), herself, Eva Baldigo (23), and their daughter, Victoria Baldigo (2). Luke, Ignatius, and Steve were all car laborers.

On August 29th 1905 they had a daughter named Frances Cecelia Baldigo. On June 6th 1909 they had a daughter named Rose Margaret Baldigo.

In the 1910 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Stephen (28), Eva (28), Victoria (7), Frances (4), Rose (10/12), and Stephen’s brother, John (24). Stephen was a repair man. John was a laborer in the oil mills.

On March 6th 1911 they had a daughter named Emma Evelyn Baldigo. On February 21st 1915 they had a son named Edward Michael Baldigo.

In the 1920 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Stephen (38), Eva (37), Victoria (17), Frances (14), Rose (10), Emma (8), Edward (4 and 10/12), and Stephen’s brother, John (33). Stephen and his brother John were both repairmen.

In the 1930 census they were living in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Stephen (48), Eva (48), Frances (23), Margaret (21), Emma (19), and Edward (15). Stephen was a proprietor at a grocery store. Frances was s stenographer at a whole sale dry food. Margaret and Emma were clerks at a grocery store.

In the 1940 census they were living in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of Steve (59), Eva (59), Vicotria (35), Emma (29), and Edward (25). Stephen was now a manager at a retail grocery. Victoria was a stenographer at a wholesale implement. Emma was a clerk at a retail grocery. Edward was an intern in a hospital.

Sadly on July 3rd 1951, Stephen John Baldigo died. He was 68 years old. Eva (Maciora/Dennis) Baldigo died on September 22nd 1960. She was 78 years old.

John Martin (Maciora) Dennis, Augustina (Fordaszewski) Dennis, and Cecelia (Fordaszewski) Dennis

John Martin Maciora was born in June of 1867 to Peter Maciora and Anna (Wisniewski) Dennis. When he came to America he changed his last named from Maciora to Dennis.

During the 1890s both John and his brother Luke worked in the logging camps near Aitkin, Minnesota. Each of them at one end of a long crosscut saw did the laborious task of cutting down the big timber trees. Branches were trimmed from each tree and the logs were dumped into the Missississippi River and floated to a saw mill.

It was said that John was an energetic, impulsive man while Luke was calm, mild mannered man.

There is a story that has been told about John. While John was residing in one of the camps he trapped and killed a bear that had wandered into camp. He drove the bear into a hole in a hollow stump. He then quickly drove a pointed sapling in front of the opening so the bear could not escape. Then, with another pointed stick, he antagonized the bear and when the bear went to bite the stick, John shoved it down the bears throat and killed it. The camp was said to have fed on bear steak, instead of their regular salt pork and beans for some time after.

In the 1900 census he was living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota with his brother, Lukas. The household consisted of Lucas (25), Verna (21), John (27), Eva (18), and a boarder named, Stanislaus Kaminski (19). He wrote his immigration date as 1895. He was listed as working as a coach cleaner for the Rail Road. His brother, Lucas (Lukas) was a coach cleaner as well for the Rail Road. His sister Eva was a laundress. The boarder, Stanislaus was a saw mill laborer.

On July 17th 1900 he married Augustina Fordaszewski, she was born in August of 1882 in Prussia to Frank and Frances Fordaszewski. John was 33 and Augustina was 17.

They soon had a son named Florian Lawrence Dennis on March 30th 1901. Sadly in about 1902, Augustina (Fordaszewski) Dennis died. She was about 20 years old.

On May 20th 1903 he married Augustina’s younger sister Cecelia Fordaszewski. Cecelia was born in Michigan. John was 35 and Cecelia was 17.

On June 5th 1904 they had twins George Henry Dennis and Maryanna “Marie” Cecelia Dennis.

In the 1905 Minnesota, Territorial and State Census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of John (30), Cecelia (20), Lawrence (5), George (1), and Mary (1). John was a fireman at a Rail Road.

On July 29th 1908 they had a daughter named Dorothy Dennis.

In the 1910 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of John (41), Cecelia (23), Lawrence (9), George (6), Mary (6), and Dorothy (1 and 8/12). John was a fireman at a malting company. Cecelia was a seamstress.

On April 2nd 1914 they had a daughter named Frances Marcella Dennis.

In the 1920 census they were living in Minneapolis Ward 1, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of John (51), Cecelia (34), George (15), Mary (15), Dorothy (11), Frances (5), and Lawrence (18). John was a laborer at a malting company. Cecelia was a midwife. Mary was a seamstress. Lawrence was a foreman.

On January 11th 1922 they had a son named Robert William Dennis.

In the 1930 census they were living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of John (58), Cecelia (42), Marie (25), Frances (16), and Robert (7). John was a fireman at a security building.

In the 1940 census they were living in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The household consisted of John (68), Cecelia (53), Marie (35), and Robert (17). John was a stationary fireman.

Another story about John is that later in his life he worked as a night watchman at a malting plant. He been crippled earlier in an accident and had to walk with a cane. When he was limping along with his cane one night as a night watchman he was held up by two men. He used his cane to knock out the two men, leaving them on the sidewalk. Later the police found the two men, they were still dazed and bewildered with egg sized lumps on their heads.

Sadly on November 29th 1946, John Martin Dennis died. He was 79 years old.

Cecelia (Fordaszewski) Dennis died on May 5th 1954. She was 68 years old.
